Dahteste- As Skillful as the Men
Available Exclusively at The Russell Auction 2025
The Annual Russell Auction is coming up this year on March 22, 2025! Jeremy has an incredible historical piece available at this show this year.
Dahteste (1860–1955), a Chokonen Chiricahua Apache woman, was a warrior of exceptional talent. Renowned for matching men’s skill in combat and strategy, she joined her husband on raids. Tradition holds, “She could outshoot, outhunt, outfight, and outrun any man,” earning her widespread respect. During the Apache Wars, she fought alongside Geronimo and Lozen against Mexican and American forces, while also negotiating as a translator, fluent in English and Spanish.
Noted for her beauty, she wore her hair long and unbound, unlike most Apache women.
This painting, Dahteste: As Skillful as the Men, depicts her guiding a young band of Apaches. The artist's signature style blends vivid realism with abstract elements showcases Dahteste, her leadership and her enduring legacy.
If you'd like to own this piece, you can join Jeremy in person at The Russell Auction to bid, or you can bid online using the absentee bidding form.
